How Are You Going to Build a Community?

A strategic operations update

A colleague recently asked me a direct question: if I'm stepping back from coursework to focus on building out the site, how exactly am I going to build a community around it? It's a fair question, and it deserves a real answer — not a vague one about "engagement" or "content." Here is the actual operating plan.

The Core Mechanism: A Lead Magnet, Not a Megaphone

The strategy centers on a lead magnet — a piece of value offered up front — as the entry point into a longer relationship. This is standard inbound marketing architecture, the same framework taught in HubSpot's methodology: attract, engage, delight. The goal isn't to broadcast at people. It's to build a pathway that turns first-time visitors into repeat readers, and repeat readers into advocates.

An email list is the backbone of that pathway, and for good reason. Unlike a social post that disappears into a feed, an email list is measurable in ways that actually matter:

  • Who opens a given send, and when
  • What they click on once they're in
  • How engaged they are over time, not just in a single moment

That data doesn't just sit there — it feeds back into the content itself. The pieces that perform get built on; the ones that don't get retired or reworked. Over time, that turns a content calendar from a guessing game into a guided system pointed at specific outcomes: a download, a review, a forward to a friend, a purchase.

Why This, Not Just More Social Posts

On the surface, this looks like ordinary social media output — infographics, screenshots, recurring posts. The difference is the layer underneath it. Every piece is tied to a strategic direction, tracked against defined metrics, and connected to Google Analytics so performance is visible rather than assumed. It's built into a routine, not produced ad hoc.

This is also, directly, what the coursework was for. The point of the analytics training wasn't credential-collecting — it was to be able to look at what's working, what isn't, and correct course with evidence instead of instinct.

The Return-Customer Standard

Community, in practical terms, means return visitors. People who say: I hang out here. I read the last few things they posted. I'm curious what's next. That only happens if there's a steady supply of new material worth coming back for — which is why the content pipeline is built to be sustainable, not a one-time push. New material needs to keep surfacing without demanding disproportionate time or effort to produce.

The conversion points vary depending on the piece: raising awareness of a local event, moving someone toward a business transaction, or simply deepening their exposure to the platform. The email list is what makes it possible to see, concretely, who is moving along that path — and to create more chances for people to comment, respond, and participate rather than just read passively.

The Longer Arc: From Platform to Portfolio

There's a second, longer-horizon piece to this. Beyond community-building, the plan includes developing paid classes and courses. That ambition comes directly out of the degree work — the more that's learned, the clearer it's become that teaching is a direction worth pursuing seriously.

Using the platform to build and test that curriculum serves a dual purpose. It creates value for the existing audience now, and it builds a demonstrable portfolio — evidence of teaching ability that could open doors to a role at an institution, or to corporate training work like change-management education.

Why Share This Now

This update is itself part of the strategy. Being transparent about where things stand, what the thinking is, and what's been built so far — including the infographics already in circulation — turns this post into another entry point into the system it describes. It's a deliberate piece of vulnerability, offered to the people already choosing to support the work, so they can see the process rather than just the output.

This is how the community gets built: not by hoping people show up, but by giving them a reason to, measuring whether it worked, and doing it again.
